“Pulse of Greek Enterprises”

A Survey of the Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ΕΒΕΑ) in cooperation with Deloitte

Focusing on the Greek enterprises export activity and their digital and green transition

The survey is designed to evaluate the growth potential of member-companies within EBEA across their respective sectors. It provides an overview of the prevailing business climate within the ecosystem, shedding light on key factors influencing Greek entrepreneurship, particularly focusing on export activities, digital transformation, and sustainability initiatives.

Hundreds of SMEs representing diverse sectors and legal structures of the Greek economy participated in the survey. Recognizing the substantial contribution of SMEs to Greece's business landscape, they were selected as the primary focus of this research, aimed at capturing both the opportunities and challenges they encounter.

1st survey wave: October – December 2023

The main conclusions from the first wave of the survey can be summarized as follows:

  • A significant percentage of Greek companies either already engage in or plan to engage in export activities. Over time, most of these firms expect their export levels to either remain steady or increase.
  • Businesses seem to have not fully embraced the potential benefits of the green transition, unlike the digital transition, which is widely recognized as a key source of competitive advantage. This hesitancy towards the green transition may be partly because many businesses report a lack of necessary expertise in this area.

2nd survey wave: April – June 2024

The main conclusions from the second wave of the survey can be summarized as follows:

  • Larger companies appear more optimistic about the outlook for the Greek economy than smaller ones.
  • A substantial proportion of Greek companies continue to engage in or plan to engage in export activities, similar to the previous quarter. Over time, most of these companies expect their export levels to remain steady or increase.
  • Positively, half of the businesses in the sample have developed or plan to develop an investment plan, with many of them making or planning to make significant investments.
  • Businesses still do not embrace the potential benefits of the green transition as much as they recognize those of the digital transition. However, compared to the previous quarter, there has been progress in providing the necessary expertise for the green transition.

3rd survey wave: July – September 2024

The main conclusions from the third wave of the survey can be summarized as follows:

  • Larger companies appear more optimistic about the
outlook for the Greek economy than smaller ones. At the same time, most companies have either maintained or increased their annual turnover compared to previous year.
  • Less companies continue to engage in or plan to engage in export activities, compared to previous quarter. However, out of these
companies, even a larger proportion expect their export levels to remain steady or increase.
  • More than half of the businesses have developed or plan to develop an investment plan, similar to the previous quarter. Positively though, even more than half of them make or plan to make significant investments, compared to their turnover.
  • Businesses still recognize the potential benefits of digital transition more than they do those of the green transition. However, more companies – compared to the previous quarter – seem to have
embraced the potential benefits of green transition as well.
