Deloitte named Leader in IDC MarketScape: Worldwide ESG Strategy Services 2022–2023 Vendor Assessment

NEW YORK, NY, USA, XX February 2022 — Deloitte has been named a worldwide leader in ESG/Sustainability strategy services by the International Data Corporation (IDC). Deloitte is recognised as a leader based on their global end-to-end capabilities and deep expertise which enables them to be responsive to their client needs.

The IDC MarketScape: Worldwide ESG Strategy Services Vendor Assessment assesses the capabilities and business strategies of 17 prominent ESG/Sustainability strategy consulting services vendors. This evaluation is based on a comprehensive framework and a set of parameters expected to be most conducive to success in providing ESG/Sustainability strategy consultancy services.

“Deloitte is seen as excelling at adapting to changing needs of their clients while developing and implanting a large-scale sustainability strategy that is embedded across organisational groups,” says Dan Versace, IDC ESG Business Service Research Analyst and author of the report.

In defining the market, the IDC MarketScape states that “given the likely shift in market dynamics toward an environment where innovation-fuelled revenue growth becomes a more important strategic objective, many organisations will need to invest substantial sums in getting their technology, work practices, operating models and even business models transformed. For many organisations, a consultant with experience and capabilities in technology, people and organisational change can play an important role in creating and implementing a strategy for the future.”

“Climate change is a key concern for C-suite leaders and they feel a sense of urgency to take action,” says Jennifer Steinmann, Deloitte Global Sustainability & Climate Practice Leader. “According to our 2023 CxO Sustainability Report, 75% of CxOs said their organisations have increased their sustainability investments over the past year and when asked to rank the issues most pressing to their organisations, climate change ranked as a top three issue, ahead of innovation, competition for talent and supply chain challenges.”

According to the vendor inclusion criteria, those vendors selected had what in IDC's view were the most robust end-to-end global capabilities, accompanied by substantial business consulting and IT consulting capabilities and were characterised by a balanced geographic distribution of revenue such that no single macroregion (Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Africa [EMEA], and Asia/Pacific) accounted for two-thirds or more of the vendor's combined worldwide IT and business consulting revenue.

“Climate technology will play a critical role in the race to decarbonise,” says Marcus Goetz, Deloitte Global Sustainability & Climate Assets & Alliances Marketplace Leader. “At Deloitte, we are focussed on harnessing the full potential of technology – whether that is hard technology, software as a solution, or emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, satellite and metaverse innovation. We have developed products and services to help our clients reduce their carbon footprints, manage the risks of transitioning to net-zero and integrate environmental, social and governance (ESG) and climate criteria into their investment decisions.”

Additional findings

  • “Deloitte’s extensive ecosystem and global scale enable them to provide benefits to a wide range of clients across industry, sector and geography.”
  • “Deloitte is also considered excellent at continually refreshing and deepening its consultants' skills to keep up with changing issues, approaches and insights.”
  • “Deloitte has a proven track record of building new climate solutions and ventures, as well as accelerating and commercialising early stage climate technology innovators.
  • “Deloitte’s maturity assessments allow them to ‘meet clients where they are’ in terms of their needs and maturity. Through this Deloitte can also work to break-down organisational silos and integrate ESG/Sustainability initiatives across business units to achieve aligned action and accelerate progress.”

“Building upon decades of sustainability and climate client service, Deloitte has assembled one of the largest global networks of sustainability experience”, says Steinmann. “We believe a better future is possible and through our breadth and depth of services and capabilities, Deloitte has an important role to play in guiding organisations through their sustainable transformation journeys.”
