Meet Navaz. A director in Forensic at Deloitte South Asia, Navaz and her team look at fraud investigations and unethical activity within companies. Simultaneously and from a proactive stance, they try to help companies prepare themselves—by reminding their employees to put their books in order, etc.—so that they can be more ethical organisations. She notes these clients need somebody to help them understand the issues at hand, what’s gone wrong—or could, quantify the problems and enable them to regroup, rethink and come back stronger and more ethical.
“I think the key to a role in forensic is that you need to be a very logical person. It really is just like the law in a way—very logical, very structured,” she says. Before coming to Deloitte and before she went on to get her MBA, Navaz practiced law. The high-pressure nature, intense regulatory scrutiny and challenging investigations of forensic is where Navaz thrives. “You need to be able to really think things through and have a certain amount of foresight to anticipate what could go wrong.” Her knowledge of the law allows her to think like a fraudster and be a better investigator and advocate for her clients.
Wherever she goes, Navaz leads by example. “The really rewarding work comes when I’m working with a team of young people who are very curious to learn about this work and have a desire to grow.” She’s enjoyed the chance to mentor young talent in her eight years with Deloitte. “It’s fantastic to be able to encourage others in this area, to show them the diversity and the opportunity that exists within forensic.”
