What expectations did you have for the Trainee period? How have theymet?

Coming into the Trainee program, I expected to gain legal experience in a client-facing environment, develop my technical and commercial skills, and be exposed to diverse legal matters. My expectations have been met, the variety of matters I have been involved in has been broader than expected. I have been given responsibility in those projects from early on, which has pushed me to develop quickly. Beyond this, the experience has also given me a much clearer sense of where I want to take my career, which feels like a valuable takeaway.
 

What kind of projects have you had the opportunity to work on? What has been your role in those?

During my Trainee period, I worked on diverse client-facing legal matters across employment, M&A, corporate, public procurement, and technology law – keeping things varied and engaging. The breadth of practice areas has been invaluable, allowing me to develop a broader skillset and explore different specialisations. My role has varied by project but typically involved legal research, liaising with authorities, drafting and reviewing documents, responding to client queries, and contributing directly to client communications and meetings.
 

What kind of support have you received during the period (from your colleagues, coach, leaders)?

I have felt genuinely supported throughout the Trainee period. Colleagues are approachable and willing to answer questions without making you feel inadequate. The feedback has been substantive and constructive rather than superficial, which has accelerated my development. The team actively encourages questions and initiative, and knowing that support is available gives you the confidence to take step up rather than wait to be told what to do.
 

In which direction would you like to develop after the Trainee period?

Having worked across different legal practice areas during the Trainee period, I have built a broad foundation. Going forward, I am keen to develop deeper specialisation in technology, corporate, and M&A law while retaining the ability to advise on cross-disciplinary matters. I am also motivated to take on greater responsibility in client interactions, progressing from a supporting role to leading engagements and delivering legal solutions more independently.

How would you describe the working environment at Deloitte?

The environment is collaborative and innovative, and there is always something interesting happening. What I appreciate is that legal work is never siloed, as the business context is always integral to the work. What sets Deloitte apart is the depth and breadth of expertise across the organisation. The cross-functional collaboration with other business units is particularly distinctive; in practice, it means clients needing legal advice with a technology angle can access both services under one roof – something very few firms can offer.

What opportunities for growth and development have you experienced during your time as a trainee?

The Trainee period has offered more opportunities for growth than I anticipated. Exposure to diverse legal practice areas – employment, M&A, public procurement, and technology law – has built a broader foundation than a specialised role would have provided. Beyond technical skills, I have grown significantly in client interactions, workload management, and professional communication. Being given responsibility from the outset accelerated my development, and knowing support was always available gave me the confidence to take initiative rather than hold back. The growth from where I started to where I am now has been both real and meaningful.
