My Career Story: Jere Lehtioksa

Navigating GenAI and digital regulation with an integrated advisory mindset

Jere Lehtioksa’s path into law has taken him from Hong Kong lecture halls to Helsinki law firms and into the world of Big Four consulting. Along the way he has specialised in technology, data and IP, building a profile at the crossroads of regulation, technology and business. At Deloitte Legal Finland he now focuses on AI and digital regulation, helping clients make sense of new rules – and turn them into concrete opportunities and solutions.

I would recommend Deloitte Legal to people who want to help shape how legal and technology services are delivered and who enjoy creative problem‑solving in a collaborative setting.
From Hong Kong to Helsinki – an unconventional journey into law

My journey into law has been anything but traditional. I moved to Hong Kong in 2009 and completed a four‑year legal LLB degree in English, based on the English common law system. Early in my studies, I worked as an in‑house legal trainee, which gave me a concrete view of how the law works in a corporate environment. In 2014 I decided to return to Finland to continue my legal studies and to build a career at a time when technology and data regulation were rapidly developing, both in Finland and across the EU.

I entered the University of Helsinki, focusing on EU and national intellectual property and competition law. Alongside my studies I worked in several major law firms on intellectual property (IP) and data‑related matters, and later in another Big Four firm, where my responsibilities gradually expanded from junior legal work into a broader consulting role. During this time, I completed my Finnish Master of Laws degree (OTM) while working full time. Looking back, that mix of studies and work was demanding, but it confirmed that this was the path I genuinely wanted to be on.

Choosing Deloitte – integrating law, technology and business

When I thought about my next career step, Deloitte stood out as the right platform. I wanted to work in an environment where legal, technology and business are genuinely integrated, not just coordinated in parallel. Deloitte’s strong track record in technology implementation, combined with their global focus on trustworthy AI, offered exactly that.

I joined Deloitte Legal at the beginning of 2026 to work at the intersection of AI, data and regulation. My work spans both private‑ and public‑sector clients and often involves cross‑border dimensions. What I value most is that collaboration across business areas is part of everyday life: we build solutions together with colleagues from strategy, technology, risk and other teams, and clients see the benefit of that integrated support in their transformations. That kind of everyday collaboration with colleagues is one of the main reasons I enjoy coming to work.

Legal is a bridge between regulation and solutions

My focus is on technology and data regulation, AI and IP, with a particular emphasis on how organisations can turn regulatory change into a driver of resilience and growth. Recent years have brought a steady stream of new EU rules, from AI and data regulation to cybersecurity and sector‑specific frameworks. Behind this lies a clear ambition around digital regulation: enabling organizations to stay compliant and protect their business operations and valuable data while at the same time increasing their competitiveness. The task is not simple and requires legal experts to act as bridgebuilders between regulation, technology and business.

In practice, this means helping clients design and implement AI systems in a compliant and pragmatic way, embedding new cybersecurity and operational‑resilience requirements into existing governance structures, and developing strategies for protecting and leveraging their data and IP. I see legal as a strategic bridge: regulation sets the frame, but within that frame there is considerable room to build solutions that enable innovation instead of blocking it.

AI tools are already changing how we work. They can make many tasks more efficient, but they will augment the need for human judgement at critical intersections. If anything, deep subject‑matter expertise and the ability to critically assess AI‑generated output have become even more important. On the other hand, legal experts must also be willing to adapt their role to the changes technology introduces.

One of our roles as legal advisors is to help clients decide where AI adds value, how it should be governed and where human expertise must remain firmly in control.
International collaboration and a people-focused culture

Global collaboration is a natural part of my role. Many of our colleagues in Finland have international backgrounds, and we work regularly with Nordic, EMEA and global teams. Our clients are often multinational groups, so solutions must work across several jurisdictions, not just in one market. I am also part of capability networks in digital regulation, where specialists from different countries share insights and approaches; this collective way of working is one of Deloitte’s strengths.

I would recommend Deloitte Legal to people who want to help shape how legal and technology services are delivered and who enjoy creative problem‑solving in a collaborative setting.

What motivates me most is an environment where people actively develop new ways of doing things, rather than always choosing the safest or most familiar path. At Deloitte I appreciate the combination of strong professional resources with a people-focused culture: low hierarchy, genuine teamwork and room to grow into your own kind of professional.

What didn’t you know about Jere?

The podcast I most recently listened to: A podcast series on AI and society titled AI and I. I’m interested in how technological change interacts with broader societal developments.

A secret skill that doesn’t appear on my CV: I can name almost all national flags and capitals from memory. I very much have a traveler mindset.

My “happy place” in the world: Anywhere with nature and a lake, with enough quiet to think and recharge, but still feeling connected to the wider world.
