My career story: Alex Clarke

Bridging finance, technology, and cross-border collaboration in audit

Alex Clarke works as a Director in the Audit Analytics team at Deloitte Finland. His career is a compelling example of how diverse skills and international experience can be combined to create impactful, future-ready expertise. He has built a career that integrates finance and technology to deliver value across borders in audit.

“I’m confident audit will look very different in ten years as AI opens up possibilities that were previously unimaginable.”

Building a unique career at the intersection of finance and technology

My education is a mix of finance and technology, and my career reflects that mix. I started my journey in the UK, studying economics for my bachelor’s degree before completing a master’s in computer science. Alongside that, I qualified as a Chartered Accountant under the UK’s accounting body, ICAEW, and also hold several technology-related certifications.

“Initially, I followed in my father’s footsteps and became an accountant. I have always had a strong interest in technology and, over time, I found a way to combine both paths. Deloitte has been the perfect place for this because of its diverse service lines and the flexibility to develop new skills and explore different career paths.”

I began my career at Deloitte in London in 2014, working in audit for financial institutions. After two and a half years, I moved to the Strategy, Risk, and Transactions Advisory business unit, where I focused on financial modelling and analytics within corporate finance for five years. During this period, I gained valuable international experience, including a year in Saudi Arabia and periods working in South Africa and Scotland. In 2022, I relocated to Finland and returned to audit, this time focusing on building technology and analytics capabilities within the audit function.

Driving the future of audit through AI and innovation

Collaboration is key in my work. I have built and lead a team in Finland, the Audit Analytics team, which drives innovation and efficiency across our audit engagements.

More recently, I have transitioned my focus to AI and now a significant part of my role involves integrating AI into Deloitte’s global audit platforms. I am seconded 50% to Deloitte’s global organisation, working closely with colleagues in the US.

I also partner closely with Nordic colleagues, sharing training, tools, ideas, and client stories.

While AI hasn’t yet caused fundamental change in the highly regulated audit sector, the way people work today is already very different from a few years ago. Tasks that once took hours or days, such as sampling and testing transactions to verify financial statements, are becoming faster and more comprehensive. As auditors gain access to more advanced tools, the way we work will evolve, along with the expectations of clients and regulators.

“I’m confident audit will look very different in ten years as AI opens up possibilities that were previously unimaginable.”

Despite technological advances, the human element remains essential. Auditors will increasingly focus on areas requiring judgement and a deep understanding of the client’s context, areas that are difficult to automate. I’m passionate about preparing people and clients for these changes. I believe the future will demand strong interpersonal skills alongside technical knowledge, as technology automates routine tasks and human connection becomes even more important.

Saying yes to opportunities and growth

“When it comes to my own development, my default answer to opportunities is yes. New experiences, working with a diverse range of people, and adding value to the business are what drive me. I actively seek ways to develop the skills I’m interested in, consider what I want to be doing in the future, and explore how Deloitte can support me in getting there. I try to be proactive, own the challenge, and steer my career in that direction.”

Persistence is key as progress often takes longer than expected, but over time, it adds up. This mindset has helped me continuously grow and contribute meaningfully in mywork.

If you’re considering Deloitte, I’d say it’s a fantastic place for people who enjoy variety and international exposure. We have so many opportunities and a great culture with great people.

What didn't you know about Alex?

The latest book or podcast I read/listened to: I have many recommendations, and one of them is The Culture Map by Erin Meyer. The author advises executives who are moving between countries, helping them better understand their new cultural environment. In terms of podcasts, AI Daily Brief, which covers the latest developments in AI, is one that I listen to regularly.

A hidden talent not listed on my CV: I enjoy running and completed a 110 kilometre ultramarathon last year. I like running because it’s simple: just put on your shoes and go. No planning, just doing.

My “happy place” in the world: I love Finnish fitness and sauna culture. It’s the way I disconnect from technology and recharge.
