Smart buildings are a business opportunity. Lower energy consumption, superior indoor climate, and sustainability attract tenants and boost owner returns. But value emerges only through ecosystem collaboration. Deloitte and leading ecosystem partners demonstrate how technology, data, and collaboration unlock a building's full potential.
Smart building begins with customer value understanding. Greener, more efficient buildings create compelling opportunities for tenants: reduced operational costs, the highest quality and comfort, and alignment with genuine sustainability values. Simultaneously, they generate financial value for owners through enhanced capital access, improved asset liquidity, and commanding rental premiums. Yet realising this value requires a foundational principle: ecosystem collaboration.
During the year, Deloitte hosted innovative smart-building sessions together with KONE, Schneider Electric, NCC Property Development, Nuuka and other Smart-Building Ecosystem leaders. We opened a forum to build a roadmap of joint go-to market partnerships addressing aspects such as energy efficiency, integration of IoT, sustainable innovation and related business opportunities.
We are convinced that shaping the future of smart-building ecosystem requires strong partnerships and forward-thinking approach that leverages deep understanding of how people move through built environments, cutting-edge technology and fosters collaborative innovation.
Innovation at scale requires both speed and data-driven validation. Pilot projects are essential to this approach. The We Land office building in Helsinki acted as a testing ground by leveraging elevator traffic data to optimise heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, the initiative demonstrated with impressive energy savings potential.
Key drivers for future success:
A fundamental truth: fragmented solutions yield fragmented results, while integrated ecosystems yield transformational outcomes. By fostering an exchange of ideas among industry leaders, we are collectively exploring the future trajectory of the smart-building ecosystem - with particular emphasis on innovation, energy efficiency, and sustainability.
Each building has a unique heartbeat. Together with our partners, we remain committed to innovating: bringing academic research, organizing next forums to develop the dialogue with more and more ecosystem leaders.
