Challenge

To define its very first sustainability strategy including an appropriate sustainability program as well as the setup of an organizational sustainability management and reporting structure the client asked for support. The background was the legal requirements on non-financial disclosure (EU non-financial reporting directive). A second important driver was the client's participation in the ESG-rating EcoVadis, as requested by key customers in the transportation sector. For the rating process, the client needed to fill out a detailed questionnaire on its sustainability efforts.

Approach

Deloitte advised the client holistically during its journey towards integrating sustainability into its business over the course of different projects. Project modules included sustainability strategy, management and reporting, data collection and corporate carbon footprint as well as ESG-Rating EcoVadis optimization.

Solution

To do so, Deloitte inter alia developed the client's first sustainability strategy based on stakeholder analysis, materiality assessment and workshops, defined and implemented an internal governance structure for sustainability and set up data collection processes. We concluded a strategic in-depth and gap analysis of previous rating results and collected necessary supporting documents and information before drafting a final response including preparation of supporting documents.

Impact

Deloitte provided holistic advisory services on sustainability strategy development and implementation to a global transportation engineering client.

Deloitte impacted by reaching several deliverables to the client. We ensured its regulatory complicance with respect to non-financial disclosure and increased the client's EcoVadis rating score significantly over three consecutive years. This allows the client to participate in simplified tendering processes and is a prerequisite for supplying key customers in the transportation sector. Lastly, we facilitated internal knowledge building and transfer on sustainability across the business.
