Promoting career-readiness among Indigenous secondary students
Yalari Pathways Program
In December 2018, several team members from Deloitte Brisbane were able to make a direct impact on young Indigenous students’ lives.
Our employees were invited to The Deloitte Foundation-funded Yalari Life Skills Camp at Jacob’s Well to deliver an interactive session on career readiness to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who were nearing the end of their secondary education.
Yalari is a not-for profit organisation providing educational scholarships at premier boarding schools to rural, regional and remote Indigenous students. It supports over 180 children through their education, with more than 300 alumni currently pursuing tertiary qualifications, undergoing career training or thriving in the workforce.
The session was run by Enid Hughes (Human Capital, Partner), Pam Potter (Consulting, Manager) and Rebecca McDonald (Consulting, Senior Consultant) as well as proud Torres Strait Islander woman Renee Thornton (Human Capital, Intern).
Commenting afterwards, Renee Thornton said, “I believe I speak for the entire team when I say that we were delighted with engaged, motivated and intelligent young students. We delivered information on preparing for the interview process, facilitated activities on career design and opened honest conversations about navigating the transition from secondary schooling to the workforce. The session was not only beneficial to students at Yalari, but also to the Deloitte people who were involved.
