Regional views on AI for good

Moderator Frits Bussemaker and the group discussed how AI is being used for good in their specific regions. They also explored the different technologies and infrastructure that support the delivery of AI for good.

There is a legacy that needs to be addressed, and it depends on the types of data available. AI has been ahead in traditionally data-rich industries. There should be a whole effort put in place to digitize certain industries, before they can get to AI.

Risks associated with AI: Technology and governance of technology

What are the risks of using AI for good and letting AI permeate our lives? Prashant Kaddi joined Bussemaker to discuss his views on harnessing AI's value despite the preconceived biases present in society.

The biggest risk around AI being used for good is to ensure transparency explainability and make sure that people are willing to accept the outcome irrespective of the biases in society. The second risk is privacy, which will be huge in drawing a line of what constitutes consent.

UN sustainability goals

Bussemaker questioned the panelists on the areas apart from health care where AI can make the biggest impact. Björn Bringmann shared his assessment and spoke about how AI can be used in the education and energy sectors to help move toward sustainable energy.

Education, in general, is a great thing where AI can help. However, the focus should be on providing education rather than controlling it. Apart from education, the most significant impact will be on the consumers of electricity or energy in general. AI can help the world move toward sustainable energy. AI can play an important role in balancing demand.

Getting the next generation involved

Sulabh Soral discussed how AI is changing the world for the better, the infinite possibilities in the future of AI, and the good it can bring to our planet’s societies. Bussemaker also questioned the panel on how to help the next generation develop a passion for using AI for good and see the positive potential that AI brings.

The next generation is already here and using AI because they are living in the age of AI. What we need to focus on is the digital divide. We need to worry [about] bridging this gap, and when AI becomes more prevalent in our everyday lives, how will we rescale so many people to do something meaningful?
