For the first time in over 50 years, the September 2006 edition of the Harvard Business Review will be publishing an article dedicated to the mining industry. The article, written by Dr Mergen Reddy, Strategy expert in Consulting, Johannesburg, and Boetie Swanepoel from Harmony Gold, a key Deloitte client, features the issue of managing the HIV/AIDS risk in the mining industry whilst improving stakeholder returns. The approach is unique, in that the authors have viewed HIV/AIDS not as a health problem, but as a risk/return problem. By using portfolio theory and derivatives trading, the authors have shown how to effectively manage HIV/AIDS with modern tools and techniques from the finance industry. This adoption of statistically advanced methods to manage HIV/AIDS opens up an exciting new way to manage spiralling costs. |
