Accounting and Auditing

The Accounting & Auditing division primarily assists our people in delivering quality work to our clients. Our main focus is on providing technical Accounting and Auditing support to the Audit practice. In addition, we provide accounting advice and training to clients.

The Accounting & Auditing division consists of three key areas, namely:

  • Accounting, which assists audit and non-audit clients with key accounting technical judgments and training.
  • Audit & Regulatory, with a focus on keeping up to date with the latest developments in the auditing and regulatory fields in order to assist our practitioners to comply with the necessary requirements in performing audits and similar assurance engagements.
  • Professional Standards Review (PSR), which adds an additional level of review to those engagements requiring engagement quality control reviews (EQCR) as determined by the Southern African Member Firm.

What we do

In order to adequately service our clients, our team includes individuals with the necessary skill, experience and expertise.

Accounting

  • The Accounting team in Deloitte and Touche South Africa is one of the Deloitte Global Centres of Excellence for IFRS. It is the only Centre of Excellence in Africa and the Middle East. A&A is the embodiment of Deloitte’s Thought Leadership in technical accounting matters and is therefore ideally placed to provide technical input
  • Various members of our team are members of the Accounting Practices Committee and its subcommittees who are involved in developing local accounting guides, and commenting on IFRS
  • We are also represented on the board of the Accounting Standards Board which sets Public Sector accounting standards in South Africa

Audit and Regulatory

  • We are involved in the Committee for Auditing Standards in South Africa (CFAS) and various subcommittees to influence local audit and review standard-setting, as well as other auditing and regulatory fields. This allows us to be of great assistance to our people in equipping them to have the right level of knowledge and understanding of these areas, leaving more time for them to engage with clients on key issues

Professional Standards Review

  • PSR performs an independent review to ensure that, before a document subject to review and bearing the Deloitte and Touche name leaves the Firm, the necessary risk management procedures and internal quality control processes have been performed. The process identifies any remaining areas of non-compliance with professional standards, Firm policies and Firm methodologies and gives clearance on the release of any deliverables by the practice office.

Key Services

Practice support

We keep up to date with the latest developments in the accounting, auditing and regulatory fields in order to assist our people in understanding changes in these fields and how it will impact them and their clients while performing audit or other assurance engagements. We further develop tools and templates and circulate guidance to our people which assist them in having meaningful conversations with their clients around complex matters and to keep a high standard of quality service they render to our clients.

Training

In our fast-paced, regulated environment, the need for sharing of knowledge is critical. Our learning initiative is geared at equipping our people with the necessary knowledge to execute efficient and effective audits. We are responsible for the Audit Technical learning across all the offices in Southern Africa and include mandatory training sessions as well as regular communication of important matters and hot topics which we believe are relevant to our people. We also provide Accounting support to clients on a variety of transactions.

Quality Reviews

As a Firm, we are subject to quality reviews by external regulators as well as internally as required by the Global Firm, on a regular basis. We co-ordinate these reviews and communicate the main findings to our people to create an awareness and encourage them to apply the best practices coming out of these reviews, going forward. We also develop and implement remedial actions to respond to quality review findings.

Influencing the profession

Our team is involved in the Accounting Practices Committee, Accounting Standards Board, Committee for Auditing Standards in South Africa (CFAS) and various subcommittees. We are therefore able to provide valuable input in the local standard-setting process. We also actively participate in the Deloitte global technical audit and accounting policy setting forums to remain involved in international standard-setting activities and to influence internal Deloitte policies.
