Upper Echelon Podcast:Jan Nelson, CEO, Pan African Resources

BSc. (Hons)
Chief Executive Officer Pan African Resources
After obtaining his honours degree in Geology, Jan Nelson embarked on a career in gold exploration and mining in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Tanzania. He has over 15 years’ experience and, within this period, held positions in mine management and operations with Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited, Hunter Dickenson and Gold Fields Limited.

Jan originally wanted to study Marine Biology before people advised him that there was more money to be made in mining, so he studied geology instead. Pan African’s Barberton mine is home to some of the oldest rock formations in the world. At one point the Barberton mine had 900 illegal miners who carried AK47s, grenades and RPGs. They had to shut down the ventilation, employ informants and special armed units in order to resolve the problem.
