Deloitte achieve a National CommunityMark award

Deloitte has successfully achieved the Business in the Community(BiTC) CommunityMark award. We are one of 21 companies to be awarded the CommunityMark.

The CommunityMark is one of BITC’s newest and most exciting initiatives. 

It’s a new standard that recognises companies which are good investors in the communities they are part of. Its aim is to improve the impact that community investment has on business and society. We’ve been awarded the CommunityMark because we can demonstrate a long term, high-level commitment to investing in our communities. We’ve been recognised for following good practice and for making a real difference.

The assessment process is both robust and rigorous. It includes an in-depth review of how companies invest in their communities and measures the difference that the investment makes to both the community and the business. Some sample questions asked in the application can be found below.

Systems and policies which support your employees to contribute?

We offer all employees who take part in our volunteering projects up to half a day each month in the firm’s time, subject to partner approval. We link volunteering to our personal development system by asking volunteers to identify three personal development objectives and to sign these off with their appraiser or counsellor. We provide guidance on how each project links to the firm’s core competencies and this is published in our community investment handbook. We encourage our people to take part in a local Community Day and we provide a full day in the firm’s time for this activity. We provide specific time codes for our employees to record their involvement in approved community projects. We set community investment targets for each of our regional offices and each of our London office service line groups in relation to volunteering, payroll giving, fundraising and participation in Community Days. We offer a comprehensive payroll giving scheme through The Charities Aid Foundation and we provide £150,000 matched funding each year for contributions

How do you engage your employees so they are enthused about want to get involved in your community projects?

We use a number of different methods to engage our employees in the community programme:

  • Induction for Graduates and Experience Hire include information about the programmes in our recruitment literature and we deliver an introductory session on the community programme.
  • All of our employees receive a copy of our community investment handbook (attached) which gives information about how to get involved in each of our projects.
  • A large network of community champions throughout our firm.
  • We hold information and briefing sessions to promote our volunteering schemes.
  • We cascade communications via our champions using branded emails and we encourage champions to send local communications from the partners in order to demonstrate local support at senior level.
  • We have a comprehensive intranet site which provides details of the entire programme.
  • We use on-line voting for the nomination and selection of our national charities

How do you measure and evaluate? 

We publicly report our targets and achievements on our website, in our annual report and our Corporate Responsibility report. We will also carry out further stakeholder reviews during the period 2008-2010.

When measuring and evaluating our projects, the following questions are considered:

  • Key inputs
  • Targets to make a sustainable difference
  • What has the project contributed so far
  • Sustainable difference made to the business.

What are your commitments for the next three years?



Community Days Continue to grow our Community Day project [and ensure that up to 3,000 Deloitte people participate] CSV provide us with annual report which summarises the impact of our Community Day project.  The feedback from our community partners and Deloitte participants allows us to assess the impact of the project and make continuous improvements to the programme
Disability Sport

Continue to fund TASS awards each year between 2008-2010

Continue to fund and develop the operation of the Deloitte Parasport programme

  • We will work in partnership with SportsAid to monitor the progress of athletes who receive bursaries.
  • We will work with the British Paralympic Association to monitor use of Deloitte Parasport and the extension of the programme to new audiences.
  • We will gather feedback from individual users on their experience of the programme and where it can be enhanced.  We will use the programme as a model approach to share with London 2012 as they look to identify how to grow sporting participation in the run up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Employability Initiative

Fund training of 100 employability skills trainers each year.

Increase the number of students on Deloitte Employability Courses each year

Our on-line database records every teacher who receives funded employability skills training through a Deloitte Employability Centre. It also enables us to track the enrolment of students and their progression into employment or further education following their completion of the Deloitte Employability course.
Fundraising & Payroll

Aim to increase our fundraising targets by 10% year-on-year

Aim to recruit at least 500 new members to our Give As You Earn scheme each year

Our national charity partners will record how our fundraising receipts are used to support the specific projects we have chosen for the duration of the partnership


Continue to increase our volunteer numbers by extending opportunities to our people.


We will continue to carry out an annual survey of all our volunteers to assess both community benefits and business benefits.
