Improving Market Sentiment Can Lead To Increased Deal Volume

The December 2009 edition of Middle Market Merger and Acquisitions (M&A) News, produced by Deloitte Corporate Finance LLC, includes the following highlights:

  • Middle Market Deals Gain Market Share: After reaching a quarterly low of 74 percent of the total U.S. M&A deal volume in Q4 2008, middle market deals with enterprise value of less than $250MM increased to over 84 percent of all deals with disclosed values in Q3 2009.
  • PE Add-On Acquisitions Increase: Announced private equity (PE) deal volume in Q3 reached the highest quarterly total for the 2009, but is still down 36 percent year-over-year from Q3 2008.
  • Debt Markets Remain Cautiously Optimistic: Like private equity firms, lenders have expressed caution when originating new loans as the economic outlook remains unclear.
