Chris has over 23 years commercial and regulatory advisory experience and is a senior leader in the Deloitte Australia anti-money laundering (AML) practice. He actively advises Asia Pacific (APAC)/Australian financial institutions across investment & retail banking, asset and wealth management sectors.
Chris is a chartered accountant with extensive regulatory and forensic review experience. This includes many of Australia’s leading asset and wealth managers, including local subsidiaries of the world’s largest organizations in these sectors. The variety of Chris’ experience spanning commercial, regulatory, law enforcement and professional services organizations enables him to extensive and diverse experience to his professional life. Chris has worked in over 25 countries advising on Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and related risk management, regulatory issues, operational excellence and the development of sustainable solutions and cultures.
Chris is regularly engaged as an independent professional on enforceable undertakings levied by Australian Regulatory bodies. Chris’ expertise is recognized by Australian and APAC government and regulatory agencies and he has advised on AML/Know-Your Customer (KYC) regulatory issues from Hong Kong to Wellington, particularly around trans-national and cross-border challenges facing financial institutions. He has been involved in advising Australian Government task forces examining the extent and impact of trans-national tax evasion, particularly through offshore financial centres. He is familiar with the challenges of identifying and obtaining end-user due diligence on complex commercial transactions. He understands the KYC implications around complex corporate structures and the interrelationship of agency relationship/investments mandates.
Chris is particularly skilled at leveraging the learning from one regulatory compliance initiative to related organizational challenges, including pending regulatory changes. He adopts a strategic approach to the risk, compliance, operational and commercial issues including ‘unforeseen’ consequences. Specifically, in recent years Chris has designed and delivered a number of large, complex KYC exercises for many of Australia’s leading institutions in the wealth and asset management sectors, often under significant domestic and global regulatory pressure. These KYC remediation reviews have included institutions operating across Asia-Pacific.
