Why Big Data Can Crush Traditional Information Security

The data that businesses are processing has increased significantly in complexity, sensitivity and sheer volume. Properly securing and governing that data is a growing challenge.

Companies can no longer afford to take a one-size-fits-all approach to securing their data. Rather, the appropriate level of protection for data assets should be determined based on their value. The volume and sensitivity of data flowing through businesses, combined with mercurial privacy and data management regulations, may require organizations to rethink their information security and governance practices.

As the amount of data – especially sensitive business and personal information – flowing through networks has grown, so too have the ways in which organizations collect, store, use and share it. For example, companies are increasingly storing data in public and private clouds and using third-party collaboration and social media platforms to share it. Meanwhile, the number and complexity of global privacy and data protection laws have also increased.
