Deloitte’s Technology, Media and Telecommunications (TMT) Predictions 2013

On January 15, Deloitte published its 12th edition of TMT Predictions on what's ahead in the technology, media and telecommunications sectors. There are particular insights to explore this year on many topics such as mobile, TV and security. These predictions are derived from a distinct methodology and gleaned through interviews with industry leaders, executives and consumers. Below is a quick peek at a handful of the predictions from the full TMT Predictions 2013 report.

  • The PC is not dead: it's about usage not units: Deloitte expects that in 2013, more than 80% of Internet traffic measured in bits will continue to come from traditional desktop and laptop personal computers. Additionally, more than 70% of the hours we spend on computing devices (PCs, smartphones and tablets) are expected to be on a PC. For many people, the PC will continue to be the primary computing device. We are not in a "post-PC era" we are in the era of "PC-Plus."
  • P@$$1234: the end of strong password-only security: The era of passwords is beginning to shift towards other tools, even biometrics. We anticipate that more than 90% of user-generated passwords, even those considered strong by IT departments, are expected to be vulnerable to hacking.
  • 4K kicks off: As screens get bigger, picture quality is anticipated to improve. Therefore, Deloitte expects that in 2013, the television industry will commence the roll-out of the next generation of high-definition (HD) TV, known as 4K, which is expected to offer four times higher resolution than the current highest HD standard.
  • All-you-can-app (AYCA): We expect a shift in the way mobile operators charge. Deloitte anticipates that in 2013 between 50 and 100 mobile operators will offer all-you-can-eat services with unlimited access to specific applications. AYCA will, for a fixed monthly subscription, offer unrestricted use of each service’s content, with connectivity charges bundled in.

Learn more about Deloitte's view of key developments over the next 12-18 months that are likely to have significant medium- to long-term impacts for companies.
