Tech Trends 2013 preview: CIO as the Postdigital Catalyst

The business finds itself in an amazing time, and the CIO is the catalyst. The CIO can lead the move to tomorrow, reshaping business as usual and driving innovation.  It’s a continuum. On one end, there is an unprecedented opportunity for innovation. On the other end, there is an existential threat of disruption. So how should businesses respond? And who better to lead that charge than the CIO?

When CIOs harness convergence of the five postdigital forces, they change the conversation from systems to capabilities and from technical issues to business impact. Innovation can start with ERP. Combine analytics + mobile + social for new triple-threat potential. Cloud allows “experimental IT” in these forces with marginal investment for substantial potential business value. Cyber is essential for risk-intelligent innovation.

The CIO is challenged with how to re-envision the purpose of IT with the customer in mind, which might be the end consumer, the employees, or perhaps the business partners they go to market with. Regardless, the underlying question is how to provoke and harvest this potential innovation, while protecting against disruption caused by this fundamental change.
