Tech Trends 2013 Preview: IPv6 (and this time we mean it) |
The more important it is for your business to connect with the outside world, the more important IPv6 is for your future, and the more urgent this issue is for you today.
Connectedness has become a universal part of business and leisure, but the underlying foundation of the internet is straining. Internet Protocol (IP) is the cornerstone of the net, but we’ve run out of new address space – an inconvenience for today’s devices, a non-starter for the “internet of everything”.
We may have been lulled by the successful mitigation schemes of the past 10 years, stretching the utility of the IPv4 scheme. In addition, we’ve seen positive activity from the hardware and OS providers and heard reports of success from the carriers and service providers.
However, this has echoes of Y2K. There’s no drop dead calendar, but IP addresses are woven deep into our applications and infrastructure. Migrating from v4 to v6 may require edits to code, scripts and configurations that haven’t been modified in many (many) years. Careful and proper adoption will take time for planning, execution and verification. The time to start is now.
