Meet Tom Mongoven

Director, Deloitte Consulting LLP

With over 25 years of experience, Tom Mongoven is a Director in Deloitte Consulting LLP’s (Deloitte Consulting) Technology practice and leads the Enterprise Data Management (EDM) offering. A well-versed EDM practitioner, Tom helps clients address the root causes often associated with bad data – getting them back on track before they attempt to tackle information management-related solutions such as Master Data Management (MDM), Data Quality and Data Governance solutions.

Tom works with organizations in the consumer products, retail and manufacturing industries to understand how data management and data quality solutions can support broader information management business objectives. Adding to his technical and functional experience, Tom also leads Deloitte Consulting’s EDM alliance with SAP and has implemented the go-to-market program for the alliance. Examples of recent client engagements include:

  • Development of a MDM solution for a global food service distributor, including the data cleanse construct, testing strategy and aspects of the data conversion program
  • Led the vision from the blueprint to deployment phases of an Enterprise Information Management effort in support of a global SAP implementation
  • Assessed the parts data management function for a global engine manufacturer as part of the development of an EDM capability framework and deployment plan

Tom champions the concept of the business as the owner of information quality within an organization. He has worked with functional and technical executives to establish the management of information as a competency and discipline within the functional leadership, management and staff roles of the organization, rather than a responsibility thrown over the wall to the IT group. In his writing and speaking engagements Tom has stated “based upon my experience, when companies search for the root cause of their information quality problems they typically find only 20-30% of the issues are related to technology gaps. The root cause of the majority of the data problems within a company can be linked directly back to problems with their processes to manage information and their lack of organizational accountability for information accuracy”.

Additionally, Tom led the creation of Deloitte Consulting’s Data Management Forum, in which many of our clients participate to discuss emerging EDM issues.

Over a decade ago, I led the program team that built the initial Global Data Sync registry which established ‘data’ as a hot topic with business executives in retail, distribution and consumer products. Data became a strategic corporate asset. As the scope of data management evolved from standardizing the exchange of data between retailers and manufacturers into Enterprise Data Management, companies quickly began to recognize the value of information quality as an enabler of improved operational performance and risk reduction tool for their strategic initiatives. Today, I work with clients to deploy the data management capabilities they can use to meet both growth and cost management goals.
