A Platform for the Future

When I first started my career, I remember hoping to leave my mark in the business world in some way before I retired. It was an ‘I was here’ ideology that mellowed as I matured in my career, got married, had kids, and settled into life. However, a recent discussion I had with a senior executive at one of my clients reminded me of that early on ‘I was here’ thinking. It happened when that executive asked me how long he should expect to run their customer facing dot-com technology platform for their business. I shared that several of my prior clients had been running the same dot-com platform that our team had put in place 6 to 8 years ago. He was shocked; because his experience was of more frequent (every 3 to 4 years) ‘refreshes’ of the dot-com platform at his company costing him millions of dollars. During our discussion he concluded that he too should have a dot-com platform that would remain viable for the next 8 years. When I left the meeting it hit me…I had made my mark, and had carved ‘I was here’ through the quality and integrity of the work with prior clients. I am committed to helping him achieve a dot-com platform that he’ll look back on proudly 8 years from now. And yes, I may even carve ‘I was here’ into the web server casing when nobody’s looking.
