A Great User Experience

I recently looked back at a few late ‘90s versions of big name dot-com sites, like Yahoo and Amazon. My first reaction was – wow, those sites look bland compared to their current forms. But as I reflected more on the differences between the old and new, I found it a great symbol of the evolution of user experiences associated with the Digital channel. In the late 90s the focus was on the implementation of great technologies and today it’s about building world-class user experiences for Digital channels. In the late ‘90s I showed up on the doorsteps of my clients with my architect and lead developers as the first feet through the doorway and today I show up with my creative director and user experience designers to create the vision. So you may ask what’s changed in our business and how is Deloitte different? I’d say that at the core Deloitte has recognized that creating truly great user experiences for technology solutions requires a blend of art and science; art being the conceptualization and design of the user experience and science being the hard core technology and operations implementation of it. In the marketplace I come across some great artistic agencies that can conceive innovative user experiences, but are often challenged on the technology and operations execution fronts. I also see some great technology implementation consulting firms that can do really complex implementation work, but lack the artistic influence to deliver successful user experiences. So as I’ve watched this market play out over the years I can say without hesitation that at Deloitte we think differently and it’s about the integration of art and science to create world class Digital solutions for our clients.
