Outsourcing Advisory Services
Our Outsourcing Advisory Services (OAS) practice provides high-quality assistance across the entirety of the outsourcing lifecycle, from strategy to vendor selection and negotiation to transition and vendor management. We help our clients, whether they are currently outsourcing or contemplating it, to objectively assess their situation, determine the best course of action, and implement the plan to access the sourcing marketplace to efficiently bring advanced services to their business.
Outsourcing Advisory Services (OAS), during many years of experience and hundreds of client engagements, has developed a comprehensive and integrated methodology comprising content, tools and sample deliverables which serve to make our clients' outsourcing processes as simple and seamless as possible. We leverage a framework that integrates strategic assessment, business case evaluation, options analysis, technology considerations, organizational impact and expected benefits.
Our methodology consists of five phases. First, we define the high-quality service delivery model by analyzing the current state against business goals and industry benchmarks. If an opportunity exists to modify the current sourcing mix, the second phase involves designing the high-quality solution and engaging with potential vendors, often via a competitive sourcing process. Third, potential providers (incumbents or new entrants) are evaluated on technical capability, compliance with client requirements and value proposition. Once one or more providers are selected and contracts are negotiated, the fourth phase entails designing and implementing a detailed transition program, including the formation of a vendor management organization. Finally, on-going monitoring, through the vendor management organization, focuses on alignment to business goals, adherence to required service levels, risk management, continuous improvements and tracking value for money. The outsourcing market touches upon a number of functional areas that are critical to our Life Sciences clients. Within the CIO function, of course, IT services are the predominate area of concern - specifically application development and maintenance, and IT infrastructure. In addition to BPO (business process outsourcing) areas like F&A and HR which are used by organizations in all industries, we are currently seeing strong interest in BPO areas specific to Life Sciences, including Clinical Research Outsourcing (CRO), Commercial Operations, and Pharmacovigilence; these are all areas that the OAS team supports for our LS clients.
Ready for whatever’s next
Life Sciences organizations face a number of challenges. Drug pipelines have been reduced and industry regulations are increasing. There have also been, historically, inflexible cost structures that complicate the ability to serve multiple locations and operating units, and to enable growth in emerging markets. To meet these challenges, it is imperative that higher levels of operational efficiency be achieved throughout IT and other business processes, that costs become more variable, waste and duplication are reduced, and that the organization become more agile and responsive to the market. Outsourcing can play a significant role in increasing organizational flexibility by reducing costs and converting them from fixed to variable; gaining access to skills that may not be readily available; improving service levels; and enhancing the client’s ability to quickly bring products to market by exploiting new technologies and focusing on core competencies.
How we can help
While there are a number of firms that provide outsourcing advisory services, none can offer the breadth of expertise and experience that Deloitte can bring to your organization. We are one of the few management consulting firms that offers the full lifecycle of outsourcing services, from strategy to vendor selection and negotiation to transition and vendor management. Rarer still is the firm that – as Deloitte does - couples that capability with deep competencies in the life sciences sector.
We have performed over 400 outsourcing engagements and have a rich knowledge of the providers in the outsourcing market and their strengths and weaknesses. Indeed, we were recently named #1 in the World’s Best Outsourcing Advisors for 2013 report by the International Association of Outsourcing Professionals (IAOP). It is critical to note, of course, that we are agnostic about the outsourcing decision: for some of our clients, it is the right decision to make; for others, it is not. We will work with you to understand your business strategy, where the gaps are in your ability to achieve your objectives, and team with you to craft the best approach to optimize your performance, whether through outsourcing or through one of the other means highlighted by our CIO Services.
