Generational Leadership: Becoming Leaders Worth Following |
Stanton (Stan) Smith, principal, Deloitte LLP, addressed the 2009 U.S. Naval Academy’s Leadership Conference on Generational Leadership. This conference was based on Stan’s book, " Decoding Generational Differences…Fact, Fiction or Should We Just Get Back to Work." His speech set the tone for the three-day session.
Stan emphasized why generational differences matter, and the importance of understanding the different generation groups in the workforce: an intersection of retiring Baby Boomers, a small percentage of Gen Xers, and a large number of Gen Yers or Millennials. He discussed how using knowledge of the generations can help to develop effective leadership qualities, and highlighted recent research findings which suggest that millennials are quickly assuming leadership responsibility.
