Origins of the DeepDive

The DeepDiveTM methodology began with IDEO—the highly regarded Silicon Valley industrial design firm that developed a six-step process for its product innovation business that creates approximately 90 products each year, including the first commercial mouse for Apple.

In 2001 two International Institute of Management Development (IMD) business school professors, Andy Boynton and Bill Fischer, studied IDEO’s ideas and created a general purpose, innovative problem-solving methodology: DeepDive™. With IDEO’s permission, Andy and Bill and two of their colleagues began using and improving DeepDiveTM in their MBA and executive education classes at IMD and in their private consulting engagements. In 2006, Deloitte Consulting acquired the DeepDive™, further strengthening its position as a leading strategic consultancy.
