For private equity investors (PEIs), the issues and opportunities presented by sustainability have become integral, not just to investment strategy and buy/sell decisions, but to managing their portfolio companies’ day-to-day operations. This paper describes how a strategic, structured approach that considers sustainability from both an investment portfolio and an individual-company perspective can position PEIs to meet public expectations and government requirements for sustainability performance. A “portfolio” approach to sustainability can help PEIs identify sustainability risks and opportunities for value creation and find opportunities to apply leading sustainability practices across the investment portfolio.
