A Map Always Helps

Short Takes...on Analytics

Posted by Forrest Danson, Principal, Deloitte Consulting LLP

Mention big data, and it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. It’s not just the volume of data that can be daunting. There are a host of peripheral issues that can get in the way of a big data strategy, from talent to executive buy-in, technological boundaries and beyond. From what we can tell, it’s usually a mix of all of the above.

After hearing a host of such concerns from clients, we decided it might be useful to create a map of potential obstacles – using insights directly from those on the front lines of the big data battles. It’s better to start down the big data path knowing what you’re up against, rather than encountering challenges in the midst of implementation.

As the findings in this interactive infographics show, the challenges are serious. But they’re not insurmountable, so we’ve added a running commentary on each finding to suggest ways to overcome these challenges. There can be a path forward for most cases.  Maybe it’s a self-funding pilot. Or focusing on a tightly defined challenge. Or hosting a show-and-tell with the executive team. The important thing is to get started. Have a look for yourself.
