During Q3 2009, the U.S. economy expanded for the first time in a year, a tentative sign that the worst recession in 70 years may finally be receding. Investors seemed to be gaining confidence in the recovery as well, with the volume of announced investments in the U.S rising from 2,436 in Q2 2009 to 2,718 in Q3 2009 – a 12 percent increase.
Foreign investors, in particular, appear to be playing a significant role in driving overall investment volume in the U.S. In terms of greenfield investments, foreign investments increased by 31percent from the preceding quarter, compared to a 25 percent growth in investments made by U.S. companies. More starkly, mid-market M&A deals announced by foreign acquirers increased by 24 percent from the preceding quarter, compared to just 5 percent growth in deals announced by U.S. acquirers.
