Meet Mark Klender

Principal, Deloitte Consulting LLP

Mark Klender is a principal with Deloitte Consulting LLP. Based out of San Francisco, Mark is the location strategy lead for Deloitte’s shared services practice. Mark has more than 20 years of experience in the areas of shared services, location strategy, cost reduction, and corporate real estate. He founded Deloitte’s corporate real estate and location strategy practices more than 15 years ago.

Mark has written and spoken extensively on shared services delivery, location strategy, cost management, and corporate real estate. He recently authored works on the viability of offshoring shared services and portfolio delivery strategies for global shared services (encompassing captives, outsourcing and offshoring). Mark developed the location strategy point of view for Deloitte’s 2009 and 2007 global shared services studies. He has also authored works and articles on the economic competitiveness of Silicon Valley, numerous location strategy topics, occupancy cost management and outsourcing, the impact of reengineering on corporate real estate, headquarters space needs and economic development incentives.

My Proudest Moment

The most exciting and rewarding project that I have been involved with over the course of my 21 years at Deloitte was advising the State of Washington in developing a strategy for retaining the Boeing 7E7 (the current 787 Dreamliner) development and manufacturing program. We worked side by side with then Governor Gary Locke (now U.S. Commerce secretary), his agency heads, the congressional and state legislative delegations, and local governments in what was – and stands even today – as the highest stakes poker game in U.S. economic development. It was an honor to help the state develop and play its winning hand. We knew at the time that the very future Washington’s aerospace industry was on the table – and Washington’s success ultimately helped Boeing compete globally to develop this highly innovative and critical aircraft program."
