Deloitte Survey – Public Opinions on Shale Gas DevelopmentPositive perceptions meet understandable wariness |
|
Enabling technologies have brought transformation to the oil and gas industry, where breakthroughs in horizontal and hydraulic fracturing technologies have allowed access to vast domestic energy reserves. The sudden rise in shale gas production has brought new public attention to, and concern about, shale gas extraction methods, and their impact on the communities where production is taking place. To look beyond the heated rhetoric on natural gas extraction that often dominates media coverage, the Deloitte Center for Energy Solutions commissioned a survey, polling Americans about their attitudes toward shale gas development in the United States.
Key findings
- Majority of respondents believe the benefits of shale gas production outweigh the risk.
- There is a public desire for greater industry transparency and openness for shale gas operations.
- Eighty-three percent of respondents agree that natural gas development can stimulate job growth in the United States, while 70 percent believe the development of natural gas resources can help revitalize the economies of the states and communities where shale gas is located.
- The public associates jobs in the natural gas industry with good pay. More than half of the respondents in areas where shale development is planned or underway believe that jobs producing gas from shale formations command a ‘much’ or ‘somewhat’ higher pay grade than the average in their communities.
