We all know what happened when the Trojans brought a certain horse into their city. But many companies fail to appreciate, let alone take steps to deal with, the gravity of the threat posed by their own disgruntled employees. Classified and proprietary data, supply chain integrity, public confidence and financial assets are all at risk, but so too are lives — and national security. And technology is only making it easier for insiders to wreak havoc. The human resources (HR) department has to be alert to identifying individuals who are potential threats, and the culture of the workplace also comes into play. Employees can intervene to help coworkers who may be potential risks or report suspicious behavior. Putting new security measures in place may be part of the solution, but insider threats are a people problem — and only other people can solve it.
Highlights:
- How serious are insider threats, especially when compared to external threats?
- How can HR identify individuals who pose potential inside risks before they’re hired? What are the indicators of a potential threat?
- The very skills Generation Y brings to the table can also increase the potential for insider threats, especially where confidential information is concerned. Why is that?
- What does an Employee Assistance Program or EAP entail, and how can it impact workplace behavior and performance?
