We are part of an exceptional organization and what makes us exceptional is a clear articulation of who we are, i.e., our core beliefs, and where we are going, i.e., our strategy. Exceptional firms have certain characteristics that are common across different industries and different sectors. First, they are led by selfless servant leaders. Second, they have a clearly articulated and lived core belief system. Third, they have an obsessive focus on serving clients and customers with distinction. Fourth, they are focused on their employees and as a result, they have very engaged employees. Finally, they create differentiation, differentiation between themselves and their core competitive set.

Deloitte is an exceptional organization. We have seven core beliefs that define who we are. Our first core belief is that we believe in serving our clients with integrity, objectivity, and distinction. Quality is the foundation of our brand and we are also committed to serving the investing public in capital markets. Our second core belief is that we passionately believe in taking care of our people and then investing in them. We hire some of the very best individuals, and we believe through mentorship and apprenticeship we create leaders. Our third core belief is that we celebrate and are very proud of this wonderful thing called our partnership. We believe that we are owners together and that as owners we have a responsibility, a stewardship responsibility to this firm and to our people and to our partnership, but we also have a tremendous sense of pride around what we are creating and what we will leave… the legacy that we will leave for people that will follow in our footsteps. Our fourth core belief is that we celebrate One Deloitte, that we are better as the sum of the parts rather than the parts themselves that we bring to bear on any situation the best that our firm has to offer. The fifth core belief is that like any exceptional firm, we generate exceptional bottom line results irrespective of the macroeconomic environment and we do that so that we can invest in ourselves, that we can create opportunities for the people that are part of Deloitte. The sixth core belief is that we believe in being responsible corporate citizens. We recognize that a lot has been given to us and a lot is expected of us, that we give back to the communities that we live in and the communities that we work in. Our final core belief is that we believe in being leaders in our profession. We are very comfortable with who we are. We are not defined or validated by comparing ourselves to somebody else. That doesn’t mean that we don’t compete; we compete effectively, compete aggressively, but we are very comfortable in who we are and we celebrate this notion that we are special, we are unique, we are Deloitte.

Core beliefs to be effective must be uncompromisingly lived. They are not just words on a piece of paper. This is who we are. This is the essence of our organization and every single individual that is part of this organization needs to not only understand these core beliefs, but, on a daily basis, live up.
