It’s a given that risk is an ever-present part of doing business in the energy industry. With the number of recent high-profile risk events and regulatory developments in the industry, many senior management teams and boards of directors are increasing investments on risk management issues and solutions. To help energy companies navigate these challenges and manage risk with confidence, Kim Detiveaux is a veteran.
Kim is a director with Deloitte & Touche LLP’s Governance, Regulatory & Risk Strategies practice and has over 30 years’ experience serving energy companies globally. More recently, Kim has been a leader in the development of Deloitte’s ERM methodology and the provision of ERM assessment, design, and implementation services to some of the largest energy companies in the world. Kim has extensive experience leading enterprise risk projects including the identification of risk and compliance strategy matched to the organization’s business model, and the design and implementation of risk management frameworks at the enterprise level, with a particular focus on key energy sector risks. In addition, Kim has led multiple engagements with Utilities, Oil & Gas, and Mining companies focused on the improvement of existing risk management practices.
“In the energy industry in particular, it is critical that companies keep risk management front and center to reduce the likelihood of future risks that could have a major impact. Having worked in the industry for over 30 years has shaped my perspective in leading companies in the design of effective risk management practices. It is a challenging time, as energy companies are evolving their risk management programs and predictive capabilities to help them better prepare for the unknown and to take preventative action before a risk event occurs. ”
Kim is a frequent speaker on the topic of risk management at energy risk management industry association conferences, including The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) and The International Energy Credit Association (IECA). In addition, Kim leads Deloitte’s sponsorship of ERM leading practice roundtables for Utilities, Oil & Gas, and Mining companies, which meet regularly to discuss effective risk program design and implementation.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of San Francisco, and an MA from John F. Kennedy University.
Kim enjoys traveling – his favorite vacation spot is Lake Cuomo, Italy – as well as playing golf. With four children, Kim stays active with his children’s extracurricular activities and mentoring programs, and supports the charitable efforts of the National Alzheimer’s Association.
