BioDon Mays is a director within Deloitte's food & product safety practice, focusing on product safety. He brings more than 35 years of technical experience leading to a deep understanding of product quality and safety, and risk assessment. Don provides subject matter experience for Deloitte clients who need help understanding, prioritizing, and mitigating risk related to their products. He has coached companies through the product recall process while helping them to minimize financial and reputational risk. Leveraging his experience in risk assessment and human factors, he has helped companies uncover hidden hazards and design those hazards out of products before they get to the market. Don's knowledge of product performance and quality has been used to help benchmark products against a company's competition as well as earlier generation products. Formerly with Consumers Union / Consumer Reports, Don led that organization's product safety initiative designed to reduce the number of unsafe product in the marketplace and educate consumers about risk. Earlier in his career, he served as vice president of retail and consumer product services for a global testing, certification and inspection company. He was also the former technical director of a product-evaluation laboratory of a magazine. Don is well known in the product safety community. He has testified before U.S. Congress and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission on various product safety matters. He has served as a frequent speaker and lecturer at safety conferences and training programs in addition to appearing regularly as a public spokesperson on national television. Don earned both a bachelor's and master's degree in mechanical engineering from Manhattan College. He is a member of the boards of directors for American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)-International as well as the American National Standards Institute.
