Bill Copeland is the U.S. Life Sciences and Health Care Leader for Deloitte LLP and the sector leader of the practice's health plans group.
For Bill, being the U.S. leader of the world's largest life sciences/health care consultancy at a time of monumental focus and change in health care is like playing quarterback in the Super Bowl. "The best part is that I am fielding a great team; Deloitte has world-class talent in the right positions. We have an advantage as an organization to view a company's issues from an enterprise-wide perspective that considers information technology, human capital, accounting and tax and corporate governance – we cover virtually all possible 'plays'."
“Deloitte is more than one of the most significant professional services organizations in the world. It is an incredible culture that can allow you to accomplish things you could only dream about with people that become so important to you that they are second only to your family.”
Bill's near-term focus is helping companies and governments better address the direct challenges and extended ramifications caused by new developments with ICD-10, electronic health records, health insurance exchanges and accountable care organizations. He will also emphasize Deloitte's capabilities in more traditional business areas, including mergers and acquisitions, R&D, supply-chain management and employee benefits.
A 26-year veteran with Deloitte, Bill has advised some of the organization's largest health care industry clients on their most strategic and transformative events, including mergers, affiliations, new business initiatives and financial and operational turnaround plans. He has also led projects around corporate governance and new management processes that link strategy to metrics and board oversight. During his career, Bill has served more than 50 health plans in 40 different markets.
Prior to his current role, Bill served as the practice leader for Deloitte Consulting's health reform initiative, focused on serving our clients' needs around the incredible changes resulting from the Affordable Care Act, and as the national managing director of our life sciences and health care industry consulting practice. He also previously managed Deloitte's health plan consulting practice.
Before joining Deloitte, Copeland served as chief executive officer for a major health care organization. He also helped found a national physician practice management company that attracted more than $100 million in private equity capital to build the first generation of accountable care organizations.
In addition to his Deloitte responsibilities, Bill has served on the Finance Committee for the Board of Trustees of St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Indiana. He leads Deloitte’s national collaboration with City Year, an AmeriCorps organization that provides leadership and teaching opportunities to youths 18-24 years old.
Bill has authored papers, including Power to the People?, I’m OK, You’re OK ... But Will We be All Right?, and The Catalyst for Health Care Reform and has been quoted on health care issues in Managed Healthcare Executive as well as numerous top-tier publications, including The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, and BusinessWeek.
