House taxwriters mull future of extenders

  • House taxwriters mull future of extenders – The House Ways and Means Committee held its first in a planned series of hearings to consider which expired or expiring temporary tax provisions should be made permanent and which should be jettisoned from the code.
  • Ryan budget clears House – The House of Representatives narrowly approved the fiscal year 2015 budget resolution recently put forward by Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan.
  • Senate approves pension smoothing, extension of Customs user fees to offset federal jobless benefits – A Senate-approved bill to retroactively extend long-term federal unemployment benefits that lapsed at the end of last year would be offset in part by a “pension smoothing” provision which would modify the interest rate that employers must use to calculate their pension plan liabilities for purposes of determining their annual minimum funding obligations.
  • A note on our publication schedule – Barring unexpected developments in tax policy, the next edition Tax News & Views will be published after Congress returns from its upcoming two-week recess on April 28.
