Business Impact Analysis Report – A Large Energy Company Prepares for a Worldwide Internet Outage |
Advances in Internet technology have improved organizations’ operational efficiency, while increasing their dependence on the Internet for day-to-day business functioning. As such, companies are increasingly vulnerable to significant Internet disruptions. A large energy company wanted to assess the extent to which an Internet outage could affect critical business operations and identify risk mitigation strategies that would adequately prepare it for recovery.
The 2007 Business Roundtable report recommended that companies assess their Internet dependencies to ensure they are able to resume vital operations quickly in the event of a major Internet disruption. A large energy company engaged Deloitte to help them assess the potential impact of such an outage.
Deloitte helped the client by creating a real-life scenario of a long-term, worldwide Internet outage in order to identify key areas of impact. The scenario was developed following a series of interviews conducted with key management stakeholders. In conjunction with client resources, Deloitte initiated testing of the scenario in order to identify critical gaps in the client’s ability to effectively respond to the outage.
Following the test and subsequent recommendations from the Deloitte project team, the client has an appreciation for the potential impact an Internet outage could have on its worldwide operations. With Deloitte’s help, the client is developing business continuity plans to address these impacts.
