A shortage of critical talent was impacting a company that manufactures business jets, utility turboprops and small single-engine planes. A leadership team within the company requested regular updates to assess the current and future work force needed to support the organization. Because there was a lack of quality work force information regarding retaining, developing and hiring, a strategic plan was needed to develop a systematic approach for identifying needs, forecasting and implementing work force solutions.

The Challenge

The company was challenged to provide its leadership team with the most accurate work force knowledge required to manually "refresh" production forecasts or demographic projections, used to develop updated work force plans.

How We Helped

Deloitte Consulting LLP's approach included:

  • Developing a methodology to forecast critical work force segment demand and supply
  • Matching and creating gap/surplus projections for each critical work force segment over the next three to five years
  • Documenting data sources, modeling approaches and any assumptions embedded within the analytics used


A work force planning capability was built to enable leadership to accurately assess current and future work force needs. The information generated is used to build a staffing plan and project future staffing needs. The redesign of the work force plan provides an innovative solution and will prepare the company for future work force shortages.
