If you are running a tech company, you are almost certainly familiar with this uncomfortable truth: you need more knowledge workers, but they are getting harder to find as their availability shrinks. There is good evidence that in the near future, the growth of the available pool of skilled and desirable talent in the United States will decelerate, potentially casting a huge shadow over companies’ ability to grow and compete. Organizations must have the right talent to respond to the constant disruption and changes in the market, particularly in the areas of technology and globalization. And the right talent for all of this is the passionate knowledge worker. But, how does an organization accomplish this feat in the face of the very real war for talent?
In the February 16, 2011, Strategic News Service Newsletter, Eric Openshaw, vice chairman and U.S Technology leader, Deloitte LLP authored an article entitled, “Talent-Enabled Ecosystems” where he shares some of the critical, but perhaps less obvious, success paths for managing workers in an idea-driven economy. While plenty of papers have been written about “innovation,” this paper takes a more comprehensive look into the demographics and motivations of what makes great thought workers tick. It should come as no surprise that “passion” is right at the top of the list.
