Meet Robert N. Campbell III

U.S. State Government Leader, Deloitte LLP

Robert N. Campbell III, DeloitteRobert N. Campbell III serves as vice chairman and U.S. State Government leader, Deloitte LLP, which includes audit, consulting, financial advisory services and tax services to the states. Bob oversees our services to state, local, education, public health care and nonprofit clients. He also works closely with Deloitte Research, the Deloitte Center for Health Solutions and the Deloitte Center for Network Innovation. Throughout his 36-year career with Deloitte, Bob has assisted government leaders at all levels with program planning and analysis, technology planning, business process transformation, performance improvement and reorganizational engagements.

Bob has worked closely with government leaders to address and resolve their critical policy, financing and operational issues at all levels of government. He has worked extensively with leaders of major federal agencies and more than 40 states on projects spanning central finance and administration, developmental disabilities, economic development, employment, higher education, human services, K-12 education, Medicaid, mental health, public health care, revenue and taxation, and student loan finance.

Bob is a frequent writer and speaker on government management issues. He recently coauthored the book States of Transition, which addresses the big issues facing the states today. In recent years he has been quoted in Computer World, Consulting Alert, Consulting Magazine, Federal Times, Government Technology, The Hill, USA Today, Bloomberg, Stateline, Washington Technology and other leading publications. Most recently, he was interviewed by Stateline.org (After Furloughs, States Mull Permanent Cuts, December 2, 2009), and his op-ed was published by the Chronicle of Philanthropy (America Needs a New Way to Finance Social Services, November 12, 2009).

Bob also has addressed a number of public sector associations, including the Council of State Governments, National Conference of State Legislators, Governing Magazine’s Government Performance Conference, the National Association of Auditors, Comptrollers and Treasurers, and the Association of Government Accountants. Bob also represents Deloitte with key associations, including the Democratic Governor's Association, the National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO), the National Governor's Association, the Republican Governor’s Association, the Democratic Governor's Association, and the National Council of State Legislatures.

Most recently, Bob served on the 19-member Bipartisan Policy Center’s U.S. Debt Reduction Task Force. The goal of this task force was to develop bipartisan recommendations to reduce and stabilize the national debt held by the public at the current 60 percent of GDP by 2020 and ensure that it stops growing faster than the economy. The report generated by this Task Force, Restoring America’s Future, was released in Washington D.C. on November 17, 2010.

During his tenure, Bob has held a variety of leadership roles at Deloitte, including serving as one of the first consulting global senior partners; leading a national consulting industry; heading up the organization’s Austin, TX, practice; leading its Federal, Texas and Florida account programs; and serving as leader of a regional industry program.

Bob is a former member of Deloitte’s Managing Partners Advisory Council. He also has served on numerous other committees, including the Global Fairness Committee, the Global Nominating Committee, the Global Service Line Committee, the Global 2010 Planning Committee, the U.S. Political Action Committee Board, and the U.S. Policy Council. He also led business planning efforts as the organization prepared to enter the global outsourcing market. In 1999, he was awarded our annual Curtis Award for Partnership Values.

Bob received a bachelor’s degree with honors from Austin College and a master's degree in public affairs from the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, University of Texas. He has served on various community boards and committees and is presently a member of the Advisory Board of the LBJ School of Public Affairs, University of Texas at Austin, and the Executive Committee of the University of Texas Chancellor’s Council.
