The CIO Lifecycle: Thriving in Transition and Beyond

What are the lifecycle phases CIO’s need to consider for company technology transformation


As the corporate demand for information technology continues to accelerate, the importance of the role of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) to overhaul and modernize the company cannot be overstated. The CIO needs to be in lock-step with the strategies of the company, ready to don the many hats expected. On any given day, the CIO can be asked to attract new talent, resolve business issues, reduce costs, enable transformation with the business units, and drive innovation.

A CIO Lifecycle has three distinct phases:

  • The Transition Phase — where the CIO learns the organization and business and creates a plan.
  • The Execution Phase — where the CIO aligns the organization’s resources and efforts to create value and delivers capabilities, and
  • The Value Realization and Legacy Phase — where the value is measured, monitored and leveraged to drive broader departmental value.

Throughout this Lifecycle, the key focus of a CIO should be as an agent of change who leads an organization that delivers results. Effective execution requires CIOs to continually answer three questions:

What do I need to know?
What do I need to build?
What do I need to plan?
