Federal Health Information Technology

Are you ready? Making smart choices in federal health

Federal Health is changing. Your role in it is changing as well.  Now that many elements of ARRA, HITECH, and ACA are being enacted or becoming law, you are operating in a new normal in health care and health information technology (health IT).  As you take stock of your health IT capabilities in the new environment, ask yourself:  What’s the most effective way to put them to good use?  Are you ready?

  • What is your organization’s role in the design (or redesign), implementation and/or oversight of electronic health records (EHR) and health information exchanges (HIE)?
  • As we approach October 2013, how is your agency preparing for the impending move to ICD-10? Will this really be just a code set replacement? How are you taking into consideration the impacts that this will have on business processes, payment and reimbursement systems, and your workforce?
  • You are already drinking from a data fire hose, but the valve will likely open wider in the near future. How will your organization filter all that information, create knowledge from it, and use it as an effective tool for decision making?  Is the answer analytics?
  • What types of privacy and security threats does your organization have?  How will you protect your health data from these threats?
  • What technology enhancements will help you work more effectively with state and local governments, providers, plans, and life sciences organizations?
  • How are you going to synchronize your overall strategic plan with your IT plan?  Do you need to?

If changes in health IT mean you have a new job, it’s probably in addition to your old one.  Before you set out to do your new job, be sure you’ve determined exactly what it is.  The decisions you make today influence the choices you’ll have tomorrow.
