Energy and resources impact the business model of every Federal agency. As energy and resources increase in importance, agencies are beginning to confront the realities of supply and demand; and, to set and manage strategies for what they once thought of as simply a cost. Deloitte’s big ideas of Federal energy and resource management are outlined in a new solution map.

Yesterday versus today. Yesterday’s energy and resource management strategies focused on an enterprise creating value by aggressively managing the traditional strategic levers of people, technology and the supply chain. Energy and resources were considered the inevitable costs of operations and went unmanaged. Today, Federal agencies can create even greater value by reducing costs, mitigating risk, and addressing sustainability initiatives through active management of energy and resources.

The way forward. Federal agencies must be strategic with energy and resource management in order to create a more effective and sustainable organization.  How? By understanding and following these five steps:

  1. Broadly evaluate your enterprise.
  2. See potential threats and opportunities.
  3. Recommend and prioritize actions.
  4. Talk about expectations and goals.
  5. Implement and communicate with stakeholders.
