Meet Dr. Allyala Nandakumar

Director, Deloitte Consulting LLP

Dr. Allyala Nandakumar is a Director in the Deloitte Consulting LLP Global Health and Social Protection practice. An internationally recognized specialist in National Health Accounts, Dr. Nandakumar is considered one of the global leaders in developing methods to track resource flows to understand the efficiency of health spending. In the course of his work, he has helped design and conduct Household Health Care Utilization and Expenditure surveys in numerous countries. He contributed to the development of the World Bank led effort to develop the Global Strategic Guide on the Institutionalization of National Health Accounts and is active in assisting with the development of a Global Strategy and Action Plan on Resource Tracking. In addition, he has also assisted and advised countries on the financial viability of their social health insurance schemes.

The focus of his recent work has been to translate research and analysis into practice. Dr. Nandakumar is assisting with developing innovative approaches to track health spending on maternal and child health, family planning and infection control as well as designing and conducting Household Health Care Utilization and Expenditure surveys in numerous countries. Within these experiences, Dr. Nandakumar is involved in examining:

  • The fungability of donor assistance;
  • Factors affecting the uptake of technologies in low and middle-income countries and understanding the linkages between health expenditures and maternal and infant mortality;
  • The relationship between growth in a country’s income and spending on health and comparing the impacts of bottom up versus top down approaches on health outcomes; and
  • The costs and efficiency of hospital and primary health care services.
