bridge“London Bridge is falling down” — well, not really. But other bridges are, most notably the I-35 bridge in Minneapolis, whose recent collapse caused 13 deaths. And it’s not just bridges; infrastructure such as highways, schools and water treatment plants all over the world are in urgent need of repair and upgrade. While cash-strapped governments are increasingly turning to private investors, the investment climate can vary enormously from one country to another, with regulatory hurdles to overcome and special tax considerations to take into account. But the opportunities are extraordinary. By reducing the infrastructure deficit, investors can benefit society and make money at the same time. And that’s no nursery rhyme.

Highlights:

  • How alarmed should we be about the infrastructure deficit? What kind of impact does it have on a country’s economy and well-being? (2:59)
  • Why has the U.S. managed to maintain its infrastructure without much private financing until recently? (4:20)
  • Countries remain at vastly different stages of understanding and sophistication in taking advantage of private financing. What are the various stages of what’s called the maturity curve? (9:30)
  • What are the tax implications for private investment in infrastructure? Are there any special tax advantages investors should focus on or tax risks they should try to avoid? (18:07)
