2009 Real Estate Industry Updates - Speakers

Chris DubrowskiChris Dubrowski

Chris is the director of Professional Practice for Deloitte & Touche LLP’s real estate practice. In this role, he assists accountants and auditors around the country in identifying and resolving real estate-related technical issues. He speaks and writes frequently on real estate accounting matters, provides training to clients and Deloitte professionals, and participates in establishing Firm positions on emerging accounting issues. Chris serves some of Deloitte’s largest public and private real estate clients as either a quality assurance reviewer or National Office liaison partner. He has 32 years of public accounting experience, all with Deloitte, serving in offices in San Francisco, Phoenix, Seoul, New York and, currently, in Stamford, Connecticut.

Gavin BrandonGavin Brandon

Gavin is a senior manager currently on assignment in Deloitte & Touche LLP’s national office, working with Chris Dubrowski, Director of Professional Practice for the firm’s national real estate practice. In this role, he assists in consultations on real estate-related technical accounting issues and auditing matters, develops and provides training to clients and Deloitte professionals. Gavin is an associate in the firm’s Professional Practice Network serving several public and private real estate clients as a quality assurance reviewer. He is currently in his seventh year of public accounting, serving Deloitte & Touche LLP in Los Angeles, Phoenix and, currently, in Stamford, Connecticut

E.J. HuntleyE.J. Huntley

E. J. Huntley is a principal with Deloitte Financial Advisory Services LLP and leads the Real Estate Consulting practice. He also leads the firm’s Tangible Asset Advisory Services practice in the Mid-America region. He specializes in multiple disciplines within valuation and has participated in and led valuation and consulting engagements throughout the United States and internationally.

Mr. Huntley is well versed in a variety of valuation and consulting issues, including purchase price allocation appraisals, transaction due diligence and underwriting complex real property valuations, portfolio analyses, and cost segregation and tax depreciation services, as well as providing expert testimony and litigation support. He is a member of The Appraisal Institute, licensed as a Texas Real Estate Salesman, and is a Texas State Certified General Real Estate Appraiser.

Matt KimmelMatt Kimmel

Matt is a principal in Deloitte Financial Advisory Services LLP, Valuation Services practice and is the national real estate industry leader. Mr. Kimmel brings 28 years of valuation consulting experience to his clients and is well versed in a variety of fair value issues for financial reporting. He has been recognized as an expert witness and has testified numerous times related to the valuation of real estate along with associated damage estimates. Specifically, Mr. Kimmel has significant experience with institutional real estate, including retail, office, hospitality, industrial and multi-family properties both domestic and international markets.

Matt has managed and coordinated numerous and large multi-disciplinary valuation engagements in connection with mergers, acquisitions, litigation and disputes, bankruptcy, reorganization, corporate financial and tax planning, as well as other purposes.

J.Kyle LeFeversJ. Kyle LeFevers

J. Kyle LeFevers is a director with Deloitte Financial Advisory Services LLP. J. Kyle has 28 years of experience in commercial property consulting. He is a specialist in commercial real estate valuation and consultation. He performs and supervises projects on diverse property types and engagements and advises clients on a variety of real property issues.

J. Kyle has served on local and regional Experience Review Subcommittees of The Appraisal Institute and on the Professional Standards Panel for Region VIII. He is a Certified General Real Estate Appraiser in Arizona, California, Colorado, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Washington. He has also authored an article entitled “Maximizing the Benefits of the Appraisal Process.”

David SandersDavid Sanders

David Sanders is a director with Deloitte Tax LLP and is the leader of the real estate tax practice in Deloitte’s Houston, Texas office. He also leads the Private Client Advisors practice for Deloitte’s Mid-America Region.

David has more than 15 years of experience in real estate and partnership taxation, focusing on developing leading-edge tax ideas. He has worked with various real estate companies throughout his career, including real estate developers, real estate investment groups and REITs. He is a frequent speaker to professional organizations, including the National Association of Real Estate Companies and the Texas Society of CPAs


Lawrence Varellas

Lawrence Varellas

Larry is the National Tax Managing Partner for Deloitte Tax LLP and has 29 years of experience serving real estate, construction and infrastructure clients. His practice focus has included real estate private equity funds, inbound international investors/owners, hotel/resort owners, U.S and foreign construction companies, and real estate investment trusts (REITs). In addition to client service, Larry has held a variety of leadership positions throughout his career. In addition to his national tax managing partner role for real estate, Larry is the Real Estate Sector Champion multifunctional for the Northern Pacific Region, and has a variety of other regional and national roles, including as a Senior Contracting Partner, assisting in negotiating complex engagement terms. Larry received his B.S from the University of California Berkeley, School of Business Administration. He has a California CPA license and is a member of the AICPA and the California Society of CPAs.
