In the wake of ongoing credit crisis and a tighter regulatory environment, banks and other financial institutions will face many challenges. Foremost among them will be a heightened focus on regulation and oversight, with tighter standards already being proposed in the United States, UK and other locations. Many banks are already establishing risk committees with charters that indicate the organization’s risk appetite.
In our new point of view, ‘Getting Bank Governance Right,’ the Deloitte Center for Banking Solution’s analyzes board committee charters of large financial institutions. We undertook this analysis to determine the extent to which committee charters explicitly address risk governance, and whether board charters and board committee charters that outline the elements of finance governance might provide a useful model for developing a similar approach for risk governance.
