Diversity & Inclusion: The Business Case

A bottom line, not a finish line

Will diversity ever be “finished” at Deloitte? Will there ever be a day when we interact with each other in total disregard to race, ethnicity, gender, national origin and other traits?

We hope not. Diversity is not about erasing differences – it’s about benefiting from them. In our work for clients, we strive to turn complexity into opportunity. Within our own walls, the challenge is no different. Every person brings a different portfolio of strengths based upon where he or she comes from in life. That’s something we hope never changes.

Still, Deloitte has goals:

  • Ours should be a workplace in which everyone feels welcome.
  • Opportunities to do important work and advance within the organization should be equally available to all.
  • Everyone at Deloitte should feel free to live honestly and openly, without the need to conform to anyone else’s expectations about culture or lifestyle.
  • We should be able to walk into any boardroom and present our clients with a team of professionals that reflects their own.
  • To sustain our competitive advantage we must attract, retain and develop the best talent in the marketplace.

Our commitment to diversity is not only the right thing to do it also a business imperative for us. We believe the business imperative for diversity is obvious: Our clients expect our teams to be high performing with diverse perspectives, the global economy requires a broad set of skills and increased innovation to serve the global marketplace and the talent in the marketplace is becoming increasingly diverse – and so our work continues.

But the work itself makes us stronger. Focusing on diversity keeps us open to new possibilities. It forces us to take critical looks in the mirror and discourages organizational complacency. Diversity is a pursuit we may never “finish.” And that’s a good thing.
