Professional Associations and Conventions: Diversity

At Deloitte, our participation in leading diversity professional associations and their respective annual conventions helps us expand our talent acquisition efforts, provide valuable networking and development opportunities for our professionals, and continue to build Deloitte’s brand. We believe these conventions provide opportunities, unmatched anywhere in business today, for our professionals to connect with colleagues and industry experts and to build the relationships that lead to new clients and business success. This belief is reflected in the fact that Deloitte is a consistent premiere-level sponsor at these events.

Along with participating in panel discussions, workshops and talent acquisition efforts, many of our professionals sit on boards and serve as national or local officers. We have formed close ties with a number of prominent business organizations that represent specific groups. Six of the most prominent relationships include our relationships with:

National Association of Black Accountants (NABA) has been a leader in expanding the influence of minority professionals in the fields of accounting and finance.

Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA) creates opportunities, adds value and builds relationships for its members, the community and its business partners while expanding Latino leadership in the global workforce.

Ascend enhances the presence and influence of current and future business leaders of Asian and Pacific Islander descent and to serve as a collective voice for those business communities.

Out & Equal is the pre-eminent national organization devoted to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community in the workplace.

National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) is a network of business professionals with a commitment to education, career development and promoting the economic wealth of the African-American community.

National Society of Hispanic MBAs (NSHMBA) fosters Hispanic leadership through graduate management education and professional development. NSHMBA works to prepare Hispanics for leadership positions throughout the United States, so that they can provide the cultural awareness and sensitivity vital in the management of the nation's diverse workforce.

Some of the highlights from conventions during the past year include

  • CEO Barry Salzberg, Deloitte LLP, keynoted this year’s Power Breakfast at the ALPFA convention, and with a theme of “What Does the Future Hold”, Salzberg imparted his views on weathering tough economic times and emerging from the recession as a stronger and better organization.
  • Chairman of the Board, Sharon Allen, Deloitte LLP delivered an inspirational speech at this year’s Out & Equal Summit. Watch the video.
  • Deloitte sponsored the Women of NABA Luncheon where Donna Brazile was the keynote speaker and spoke candidly about the successes and future of the Black female community to the most prominent convention attendees.
  • Deloitte honored William Wong, President & Chief Executive Officer, HSBC Markets (USA) Inc. with the Ascend Leadership Award, which recognizes exemplary leadership in the business world and service to the Asian community. A donation will be given in his name to the charity of his choice.

“It was worth the time to attend the convention as it provided a unique opportunity to identify some of the cultural barriers that may keep Asian-Americans from reaching their full leadership potential. Being able to connect with others with the same cultural background and discuss some of the best practices and approaches to handling issues specific to Asian-Americans was very eye-opening and provided me with a new conviction to step outside of my comfort zone.”

Mary Klaasen – Senior Manager, Tax, Ascend
